Whether you give flowers, or boxes of fattening chocolate treats, Valentine’s Day is an awesome reason for the romantics in all of us to come out and show our sweeties how much we care.

The holiday in itself has become quite commercialized with people spending millions of dollars annually on chocolates alone. (Can we say cavities??)

Chocolates and extravagant gifts are nice, but I’ve always been a firm believer in finding ways to show your love without spending a fortune OR giving your loved one a box full of rotten teeth.

So without further adieu, here are my top 5 Valentine’s Day date ideas for all of you would-be romantics who may be on a budget.

Dinner & A Movie... Destination? Your Place

Dinner & A Movie... Destination? Your Place

One of the best Valentine's Day gifts that I've ever received was a homemade dinner. It was special because this man never cooked - so for him to go out of his way to make an extra special dinner just for me... well it was just great.

He shopped for everything all by himself and wouldn't let me help him prepare it. We ended the night by enjoying the meal in front of the TV while watching one of my favorite movies. It beat fighting the Valentine's Day dinner crowds any day.

Romantic Rendezvous... Destination? Your Bedroom

Romantic Rendezvous... Destination? Your Bedroom

Bust out the vacuum and dust away those dust bunnies. Make your bedroom neat and tidy then get your creative juices flowing.

Put your best most luxurious sheets on the bed, buy some roses, and sprinkle the petals around. Use some low wattage romantic light bulbs in your lamps, or even string up a red string of Christmas lights.

Turn your room into a Valentine's Love Cave. Use my chocolate covered strawberries recipe and turn it into a bouquet to place on the nightstand. Pop a bottle of bubbly, (I'm lovin' that pink moscato) and have a good time making relations.

Make Dinner... Together

Make Dinner... Together

Cooking with your partner has proven to strengthen any relationship. Whether you're a culinary genius or a take out king, cooking a meal with your partner can be the perfect way to interactively engage in some meaningful fun. Working together to make that perfect rack of lamb can build teamwork and help you rely on each other.

So call a sitter if you need one, get in some alone time, and cook with your mate.

The end result will be delicious... whichever way you look at it.

Go On a Wine Tour

Go On a Wine Tour

Château Élan near Atlanta, GA only charges $5 per person for their wine tours. You get to tour and learn about their beautiful facility and partake in tasting some of their most delicious wines.

Check out your local vineyard and make a date. If you're not into wine, most breweries do tours as well. Bottoms up!

See a Matinee or Visit a Smaller Movie Theater

See a Matinee or Visit a Smaller Movie Theater

Forget about that huge cineplex. Find a small movie theater to catch that new flick. If it's a weekday, chances are you'll have the theater almost entirely to yourself. I don't have to tell you how high that ranks on the romance meter. Checking out a movie in the early afternoon during matinee hours at the big cineplex may yield similar results.

So cram your pockets full of that candy you've got at home, head to the movies, and have yourself an inexpensive romantic date.

Love the dinner and a movie idea at home. That's basically what we're gonna do. Cook together, then watch some tele.
