A We Got Kidz Review
About a week ago I received a jar of Original Raspberry Chipotle gourmet jam in the mail from my friends over at Fischer & Wieser – the kings of specialty foods. Now being a life long southerner who’s been strictly a generic brand grape jelly girl for as long as I can remember, this gourmet jam had me a little intimidated. I mean, what if I didn’t eat it right? This isn’t a jam that I could just slather on some dry toast. I had to eat this with class.
I put it in the center of my dining room table because the jar was pretty. I’d glance at it occasionally trying to convince myself to go ahead and give it a try. Then I’d turn away embarrassed, knowing full well that this jam was out of my league. After a few days, I placed it on the kitchen counter near some pretty wine bottles. I figured it’d be more at home there.
Let me just give you a bit of back story…
This isn’t your kid’s “peanut butter and jelly” sort of spread. This was gourmet award winning jam. Fischer & Wieser manufactures over a hundred different items, (many of which have won some serious food accolades) and then distributes them to specialty food retailers, club stores and grocery markets around the world. The suggested uses for Roasted Raspberry Chipotle Jam in particular are to spread it on assorted breads, or to use it as a topping for meats, cheeses, or a hearty appetizer.
Now I’m sure you can see why I was a bit threatened. We’re a family that eats canned sardines on occasion.
I decided to poke around in my refrigerator to see what I had to pair with this jam. I closed it almost immediately, ashamed at the realization that I had nothing that would work. Then a light bulb went off.
“Why don’t I try my hand at making another loaf of bread?” I asked myself aloud.
“Wha-?!” my husband shouted from the back room.
“Nothing. Just talking to myself!” I shouted back.
“Figures.” he mumbled.
Not sure what that meant, but I was excited at the prospect of having a warm homemade loaf of “gourmet” bread to accompany my gourmet jam. I’d tried my hand at making bread once before and it turned out pretty dang good. (If you haven’t yet read about my bread making shenanigans, please do. It was a hoot.)
I gathered my materials and slaved away until I had a fresh, golden, steamy loaf ready to be slathered with jam. The kids were down for their nap, and the husband and I were ready for a mid-day treat. We slathered the jam onto a slice and took a bite.
It was absolutely delicious!
Sweet, spicy, savory, It was an explosion of flavors. The raspberries were perfectly sweet, and the chipotle peppers gave it the perfect kick. It was nothing like I’d ever tasted. Needless to say, my entire loaf of bread was devoured thanks to the delicious topping. After that, I started putting the raspberry jam on everything – baked beans, burgers, frosted flakes… Well maybe not frosted flakes, but I bet it would’ve been delicious.

He was right! I was so inspired. Who knew a simple gourmet jam could be so edifying?
